Selection Criteria
Prospective grantees must demonstrate the following in their applications:
COMMUNITY FOUNDATION
Understanding of Community Foundation Principles
Evidence of understanding of and commitment to the basic principles of the community foundation - i.e. as a local philanthropic institution which engages in effective grantmaking, mobilizes contributions from a variety of local sources and which has effective structures for self-governance.
Past Performance (for established community foundations)
Indicators of financial management and local fundraising success and results of past grantmaking and non-grantmaking activities.
Community Support
Demonstration of - or potential for - support from its defined community, including an established and diverse donor base and broad representation in the governance structure.
Capacity for Growth
Evidence of a clearly defined and broadly understood organizational mission and willingness to invest in critical systems and infrastructure in order for the foundation to grow.
Added Value
Ability to develop replicable tools for growth and willingness to share them with others.
SUPPORT ORGANIZATIONS
Professional Competence
Evidence of experience in local philanthropy development; understanding of community foundation principles and core competencies and proven commitment to develop and strengthen community foundations in the country; availability of necessary skills (either internally or externally) to train and support community foundations.
Previous Experience
Indicators of previous community foundation/philanthropy development experience.
Added Value
Ability to develop replicable tools for community foundation advancement and willingness to share them with others.
Local demand for services
Evidence of demand for support organization services from community foundation beneficiaries.
